Telling Our Stories With Data

November 2023

A significant part of Mamow Ahyamowen’s work involves building capacity in the regions and communities we serve. This year, we hosted a data training event titled Telling Our Stories with Data in Thunder Bay from October 31 to November 2, 2023.

This invitation-only event was tailored for Health Directors and others in health-related or Leadership roles. The goal of the data training was to provide sessions that took participants on a learning journey.

We initiated the journey by laying down foundational building blocks: understanding First Nation Data Sovereignty and its implications for regions and communities, addressing the questions of, “how and why collect data,” transforming a research idea into an actionable research question, and acquiring the skills to develop a questionnaire that engages participants.

On the second day, our journey continued as we delved into interpreting data, translating data into actionable strategies, and leveraging data for successful funding proposals. Our journey concluded on the third day. We looked at the bigger picture of First Nations Data Sovereignty. This included learning more about First Nations research ethical considerations and privacy using secondary health data.  In the last session, we learned about the First Nations Data Governance Strategy and the Strategy’s implementation across Ontario.

The Telling Our Stories with Data training wasn’t just about data; it centred on self-determination, emphasizing that data sovereignty is a fundamental right. Recognizing that behind every set of data lies a story, Mamow Ahyamowen provided an opportunity for First Nations to take ownership of these narratives, allowing them to tell their stories in their own way.

Mamow Ahyamowen extends heartfelt gratitude to all the attendees who travelled to participate, to all the speakers who generously shared their knowledge and expertise, to our Emcee, who skillfully kept us on time while providing insights and wisdom with a touch of humour, and to the Steering Committee for their unwavering support.

A special Chi-miigwech – miikwech –  ᒥᑫᐧᐨ to Ingaged Creative Productions Inc. for their outstanding event support and production assistance at every stage of the event. From planning, registration, implementation, and event follow-up, their team was truly phenomenal. We look forward to working with them again in the future.
