First Nations Data in First Nations’ Hands

June 2024

Mamow Ahyamowen had the pleasure of presenting at the Chiefs of Ontario Data Champion Team’s Knowledge Sharing and Information Gathering Workshop, titled First Nations Data in First Nations’ Hands. This event was held in Thunder Bay on June 25th and 26th and was co-hosted by the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority.

The gathering emphasized the importance of First Nations Data Governance and Sovereignty at the community, researcher, and organizational levels and provided concrete examples of Data Sovereignty in action. It also offered an opportunity to hear directly from Leadership about what First Nations data sovereignty means to them. This feedback will be valuable in implementing the forthcoming First Nations Data Governance Strategy in Ontario.

The First Nations Data Governance Strategy (FNDGS, or the Strategy) responds to a complex and evolving digital environment while providing a plausible incremental plan to achieve First Nations data sovereignty that is designed to ensure no First Nation is left behind… The Strategy represents a collective vision for the future as articulated by First Nations leadership, rights holders, and data sovereignty experts through a series of engagements that occurred over the course of several years.
