Sharing Mamow Ahyamowen’s Approach to First Nations Data Sovereignty with the Strategic Policy, Planning and Information Directorate at Indigenous Services Canada

September 2025
Mamow Ahyamowen was invited to speak to the Strategic Policy, Planning and Information (SPPI) Directorate at Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), sharing insights on First Nations Data Sovereignty and the Alliance’s community-driven approach to health data.
Our presentation titled, A Northern Ontario First Nations Epidemiology Alliance Addressing the Unique Needs of its Communities highlighted how Mamow Ahyamowen is leveraging existing data to support organizations and communities in their health initiatives, strengthen evidence-informed decision-making, and empower communities, while recognizing the unique needs of each community. We shared findings from the Alliance’s first analysis and discussed how we work with Organizations and communities to ensure this data gets back into their hands. Finally, we shared ways that ISC could support both organizations and communities for meaningful, community-led change.
Miigwech to the SPPI Directorate at ISC for the invitation to share a bit about Mamow Ahyamowen, the work to date, and the exciting work to come.
