Presentation at the Chiefs of Ontario Data Sovereignty Conference

October 2023

This year, the Chiefs of Ontario held its inaugural conference entitled Powering Up Data Sovereignty: Shape Your Own Research and Data Future. The conference highlighted information on the future of First Nations Data Sovereignty, turning research into action, data governance and data literacy. It was also an opportunity to look back at the history of First Nation Data Sovereignty and acknowledge all those people who previously walked this path.

Mamow Ahyamowen was honoured to be a part of a panel discussion with two esteemed speakers: Dr. Lorrilee McGregor, Assistant Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, member of Whitefish River First Nation and Chair of the Manitoulin Anishinaabek Research Review Committee and Dr. Marion Maar, Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The three speakers participated in a panel discussion moderated by Mariette Sutherland, focusing on ‘First Nations Research in Action – Empowering Research from a Community and Cultural Lens.

Chi-miigwech – miikwech –  ᒥᑫᐧᐨ – many thanks to the Chiefs of Ontario for inviting Mamow Ahyamowen to speak on such an important topic, and for advancing the conversation on First Nations Data Sovereignty.
