Decolonizing the Data Cycle – A Presentation for APHEO

September 2023

The Indigenous Engagement Working Group at the Association of Public Health Epidemiologists in Ontario (APHEO) invited Mamow Ahyamowen to present to members of their organization. The webinar held in early September was titled (Re)Envisioning the Data Cycle: Insights from a Northern Ontario First Nations Epidemiology Alliance.

The presentation underscored the significance of decolonizing data and epidemiology as a whole and encouraged the audience to actively practice reconciliation at each stage of the data cycle.

Mamow Ahyamowen highlighted the message by providing concrete examples from the mortality analysis and shared how these principles were thoughtfully integrated into both the analytic work and knowledge-sharing processes. This event marks a step towards nurturing a more culturally sensitive approach to First Nations data and public health data practices for the APHEO community.
